Probiotics Archive

I received the following email from Nutraceutical Sciences Institute (NSI) at 4:00 this past afternoon. They, or rather their computer, were very quick to misunderstand.

As promised, I composed and sent a letter to NSI (www.gonsi.com) requesting more information about their probiotics, and specifically about the 200 studies they claim support claims about the value of probiotics. I used the contact form from their web site.
Apparently I fell asleep before actually posting it to ForMyTummy!
This is the letter, dated June […]

For those who are interested in the claims for other probiotics besides Align, here is the copy writer’s description of the probiotic I use, distributed by VitaCost. It’s an example of the multiple probiotic approach rather than the single-strain approach. I’m not trying to sell this, or Align. Instead I’d like to provide information, and develop information, about the use of probiotics in IBS-C and IBS-D.

I am a great fan of ordering what I need for IBS on the web. Orders placed with the Help for IBS website, and from Amazon.com, are particularly fast to arrive. In contrast, according to this thread on the forums that now call themselves Self Help for IBs, the process of shipping Align–the new probiotic from Proctor & Gamble–is much slower. I found the following general statement of accepted therapies for IBS, according to the medical community on the web.
The etiology of IBS is currently unknown. Because of this, the goal of therapy is symptom management and reduction in the frequency and severity of episodes, or “bouts.” The management of IBS ranges from dietary and behavioral […]

I published the following summary of a recent research study on probiotics last October, and am republishing it now. The reason is that the demise of Zelnorm calls for sound solutions backed, if possible, by medical research. Note that this site has never endorsed Zelnorm. Here’s the summary–
A study of the use of probiotics with […]

Probiotics

One thing that helped ease my transition from Amoxicillin to “normal” ibs-c, was that I had started taking probiotics during the Amoxicillin phase.
Probiotics? What are they?
Well, recent research has begun to show that various “good bacteria” or “pro” meaning positive, “biotics” meaning something like biological agents, ease the difficulties of IBS for people with IBS-C […]

Or at least, this just found on the web ;-)
A study of the use of probiotics with both IBS-C (IBS with constipation) and IBS-D (IBS with diarrhea). The study is summarized in a press release from the Annual Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology, the major medical association for Tummy Doctors (Gastroenterologists), the ones […]
